Nikkelkrom

Nikkelkrom is a term used in several Scandinavian languages to refer to nickel-chromium plating or nickel-chromium alloys. In finishing contexts, nikkelkrom typically denotes a two-layer decorative and protective coating consisting of a nickel underlayer and a chromium topcoat. The nickel layer provides adhesion, corrosion resistance, and a smooth base, while the chromium layer contributes hardness, wear resistance, and a bright, reflective finish. In alloy contexts, nickel-chromium alloys (Ni-Cr) are a family of nickel-based materials that include chromium to improve oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength; these alloys are used in heating elements, high-temperature components, and various industrial applications.

Applications and use cases vary by context. As a coating, nikkelkrom is common on decorative hardware such as faucets, kitchen appliances, doorknobs, automotive trim, cookware handles, tools, and electrical contacts, where it offers a combination of appearance and durability. As an alloy, Ni-Cr materials are found in applications requiring heat resistance and structural integrity, including certain resistive elements and aerospace components.

Production and safety notes. Nickel-chromium coatings are typically applied by electroplating, where parts are cleaned and prepared before undergoing sequential nickel and chromium deposition. Modern practice increasingly uses trivalent chromium baths to reduce the hazards associated with hexavalent chromium, while some processes continue to employ hexavalent chromium for performance reasons. Quality and wear resistance depend on process parameters, substrate preparation, and post-deposition care.

Care and maintenance. Chrome-nickel finishes can be damaged by aggressive cleaners and acidic or abrasive substances; cleaning with mild detergents and soft cloths is generally recommended to preserve brightness and corrosion resistance.
