Nietresectabele

Nietresectabele is a term used in medicine, particularly in oncology, to describe a tumor that cannot be completely removed by surgery. This non-resectability is determined by several factors, including the tumor's size, its location in relation to vital organs or blood vessels, and whether it has spread extensively to other parts of the body.

Surgical removal, or resection, is a primary treatment modality for many cancers. However, when a tumor is deemed nietresectable, it means that a surgeon cannot safely excise all of the cancerous tissue. Attempting to do so could lead to severe complications, irreparable damage to surrounding healthy tissues, or even be life-threatening.

The classification of a tumor as nietresectable is often made during surgical exploration or through advanced imaging techniques such as CT scans, MRIs, or PET scans. If a tumor is found to be invading critical structures, such as major arteries, nerves, or vital organs like the heart or brainstem, it may be considered nietresectable. Similarly, if the cancer has metastasized to multiple distant sites, complete surgical removal of all cancerous cells becomes impossible.

When a tumor is nietresectable, treatment strategies often shift to other therapeutic options. These may include palliative care aimed at managing symptoms and improving quality of life, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these approaches. In some cases, treatments might be used to shrink the tumor, potentially making it resectable at a later stage. The decision-making process for nietresectable tumors is complex and involves a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists.
