Neurolog

Neurolog is a physician who specializes in neurology, the branch of medicine focused on disorders of the nervous system. The standard term is neurologist; "neurolog" is sometimes used informally to refer to such a physician. Neurologists diagnose and treat conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles, and they typically manage both acute events and chronic neurological diseases. They work in hospitals, clinics, and academic centers, often as part of multidisciplinary teams that include primary care providers, radiologists, and rehabilitation specialists.

Training and subspecialties: Becoming a neurologist requires medical school, a residency in neurology, and board certification. Many pursue subspecialty fellowships in stroke, epilepsy, headache, neuromuscular diseases, movement disorders, neuroimmunology, neurocritical care, or pediatric neurology.

Clinical practice: Neurologists perform neurologic examinations, order and interpret tests such as MRI and CT scans, EEGs, EMGs, and lumbar puncture. They diagnose conditions including stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, dementias, migraines, neuropathies, Parkinson disease, and other movement or neuromuscular disorders. Treatments include medications, lifestyle advice, rehabilitation referrals, and coordination with other specialists; some cases require hospitalization or urgent care in stroke or neurocritical units.

Care approach: The field emphasizes accurate diagnosis, symptom management, and quality of life. Pediatric neurology applies similar care to children. Ongoing research in imaging, neurophysiology, and pharmacology continues to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment options.
