Neuraniitti

Neuraniitti is a mineral name used for a hypothetical hydrated aluminium-silicate with conductive and potentially neuromorphic properties. The term combines the root neura- with the mineral suffix -iitti, reflecting proposed analogies to neural tissue at the microstructure level. In practice, neuraniitti remains a topic of theoretical and exploratory research rather than an established mineral.

Composition and structure: Neuraniitti is described as a layered silicate containing aluminium and silicon oxide sheets, with interlayer water and trace cations such as calcium and iron. The hypothesized framework envisions sheet-like crystals and hydrogen-bonded water channels that could enable mild ionic conductivity, though reported compositions vary across samples.

Physical properties: Reported appearances range from pale-green to blue, with a vitreous to pearly luster. Mohs hardness is estimated around 4–6, and density about 2.8–3.2 g/cm3. Crystals, when present, are described as foliated or tabular, embedded in metamorphic rock matrices.

Occurrence and formation: The mineral is said to form during metamorphism under hydrous conditions that preserve silicate layers. In the literature, neuraniitti has been reported from a restricted set of high-grade metamorphic belts in a notional region and remains unconfirmed by independent replication.

Applications and research status: Its proposed electrical conduction and nano-scale compatibility with neural devices have led to speculation about uses in neuromorphic computing, neural interfaces, and protective coatings for bioelectronics. At present, there is no established synthetic route or standardized mineral sample; many scientists call for rigorous verification and reproducibility before practical applications are considered.
