Netwerktype is a term used to classify networks according to core characteristics such as geographic coverage, control, and technology. It is common in IT documentation, network design, and telecom planning, particularly in Dutch-speaking contexts.

The main axes of classification include geographic scope (local area networks, metropolitan networks, wide area networks, personal area networks), ownership and management (private vs public networks), the underlying transport technology (copper, fiber, wireless, satellite), and the access method (shared media, dedicated channels). Additional axes include topology (star, mesh, ring, bus), data handling (packet-switched versus circuit-switched), and service category (data, voice, video), as well as security and access controls. The taxonomy often aligns with international standards bodies such as ISO/IEC, IEEE, and ITU, though implementations vary by organization.

Common examples of netwerktype include LAN, WAN, MAN, PAN, WLAN, WWAN, and VPN networks, as well as data-center networks and cloud networks. In practice, networks frequently combine multiple netwerktype characteristics, leading to hybrid or overlay architectures. Distinguishing netwerktype helps stakeholders communicate requirements, plan capacity, establish QoS policies, and support interoperability.
