Netiquette

Netiquette is a set of informal rules and norms for online communication intended to facilitate respectful and effective interaction across digital environments. It covers tone, timing, privacy, and the handling of information, and it applies to email, forums, chat, social media, and collaborative platforms.

The term combines 'network' and 'etiquette' and originated in early online communities. While there is no universal standard, most communities share common expectations about civility, clarity, and accountability.

Key principles include treating others with respect, thinking before posting, avoiding personal attacks, and using clear, concise language. Respect privacy by not sharing or soliciting others' personal information without consent; attribute content to its source; avoid spamming; and respect audience context (for example, appropriate tone on professional networks).

Across platforms, good netiquette includes practical guidelines: use descriptive subject lines in email; follow forum rules and post to relevant threads; be concise in messages; think before posting on social media and avoid spreading misinformation.

Netiquette also covers safety and inclusivity: avoid harassment or discrimination; report abuse; respect accessibility and copyright, obtain permissions for shared materials, and be mindful of cultural and legal differences that affect online conduct.
