Neoreactionary

Neoreactionary is a political and intellectual movement that emerged in the early 21st century as a critique of modern liberal democracy, globalization, and progressive social movements. The term was popularized by the blog *Unqualified Reservations*, which began in 2002, though its roots can be traced to earlier dissident thinkers like Samuel Francis, who wrote about the decline of American society in the 1990s. Neoreactionaries argue that contemporary political and cultural systems have become dysfunctional, leading to stagnation, cultural decay, and a loss of meaningful social order.

Central to neoreactionary thought is the belief that modern liberal democracy, with its emphasis on individualism, equality, and universalism, has failed to produce stable or desirable societies. Instead, they advocate for the restoration of traditional hierarchies, often rooted in pre-modern or pre-liberal social structures, such as monarchies, aristocracies, or even tribal systems. Some neoreactionaries propose the creation of new political entities, such as "neorepublics" or "secessionist microstates," where like-minded individuals could govern themselves outside the constraints of existing nations.

The movement is often associated with a rejection of postmodernism, multiculturalism, and identity politics, viewing these as contributing to social fragmentation and moral relativism. Neoreactionaries frequently draw on ideas from classical conservatism, traditionalism, and even some strands of libertarianism, though they often reject the latter’s emphasis on individual rights in favor of organic, community-based governance.

Critics argue that neoreactionary thought is reactionary in the literal sense, seeking to reverse social progress rather than adapt to it. Supporters, however, contend that their ideas offer a necessary corrective to the perceived excesses of modernity, advocating for a return to more cohesive, culturally unified societies. The movement remains a fringe intellectual current, with limited political influence but a dedicated following among online commentators and dissident thinkers.
