Navlebrokks

Navlebrokks, also known as umbilical hernias, are a common condition, particularly in infants. An umbilical hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine or fat protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the belly button. In newborns, this is often due to the umbilical ring not closing completely after birth.

The most visible sign of a navlebrokk is a bulge that appears at or near the navel, especially when the baby cries, coughs, or strains. This bulge may disappear when the baby is relaxed or lying down. In most cases, umbilical hernias in infants are not painful and do not cause discomfort. They are also common and generally resolve on their own by the age of one or two, as the abdominal muscles strengthen.

Diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination. In most infant cases, no specific treatment is required, and watchful waiting is the recommended approach. However, if the hernia is very large, persists beyond a few years, or if complications arise, surgery may be considered. Complications are rare in infants but can include strangulation, where the protruding tissue becomes trapped and its blood supply is cut off, which is a medical emergency.

In adults, umbilical hernias can develop due to increased abdominal pressure, such as from obesity, pregnancy, or heavy lifting. Unlike infant hernias, adult umbilical hernias are less likely to close on their own and often require surgical repair to prevent complications.
