Napaamisjärjestelmät, often translated as "paternity testing" or "DNA paternity testing", are biological analyses used to determine if a man is the biological father of a child. These tests rely on the principle that an individual inherits half of their genetic material from their mother and the other half from their father. By comparing the DNA profiles of the child, the mother, and the alleged father, it is possible to establish or exclude paternity.

The most common method used is Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis. STRs are short sequences of DNA that are repeated numerous times in a row. While the specific STR sequences are the same across humans, the number of repeats varies greatly between individuals. Paternity testing laboratories analyze a set of specific STR loci. The child's DNA profile will contain alleles from both the mother and the father. By comparing the child's alleles to those of the mother and the alleged father, a determination can be made. If the alleged father shares the necessary alleles with the child that are not inherited from the mother, it supports a finding of paternity. Conversely, if there are significant genetic mismatches, paternity can be excluded.

They are also used for personal reasons, allowing individuals to confirm biological relationships. The accuracy of these tests is extremely high, typically exceeding 99.9% when paternity is established, and 100% when it is excluded, provided that sufficient genetic markers are analyzed and no laboratory errors occur. Samples for testing can be collected through non-invasive methods like cheek swabs, or through more invasive procedures if required for legal or specific diagnostic purposes.
