Nadelfilzen

Nadelfilzen, in English often called needle felting, is a dry felting technique used to create sculpted forms by interlocking wool fibers with barbed needles. The process relies on repeatedly stabbing loose wool fibers with specialized needles to entangle the fibers at the points of contact, forming a dense, cohesive material without moisture.

Tools and materials commonly used include felting needles, which come in different gauges to control density and speed, and a soft working surface such as a foam pad or felting brush. Wool fibers can be wool roving, batting, or pre-dyed wool in various colors; artists blend colors and build up layers to achieve shading and texture. Some practitioners use forms or resist shapes to guide the initial structure, while others work freehand for more organic results.

Technique and process typically involve shaping a core by stacking and compacting fibers, then repeatedly poking the surface to fuse fibers and add volume. The piece is rotated and refined as it grows, with additional fiber added incrementally to form details such as limbs, facial features, or intricate textures. The method allows for precise control over form but requires patience, as dense areas may require many repeated penetrations. Needle types and working speed influence the final texture, from smooth to stippled.

Applications span decorative figurines, toys, accessories, and soft sculpture, as well as experimental textile art. Needle felting is valued for its immediacy and the ability to transform loose wool into three-dimensional objects quickly, though it can be time-consuming for complex pieces.
