Nacrekerroksen

Nacrekerroksen, also known as nacre or mother-of-pearl, is a complex biological composite material produced by certain mollusks, such as oysters, abalone, and pearl oysters. It forms the iridescent inner layer of their shells and is renowned for its exceptional strength, durability, and unique optical properties. The structure of nacre consists of repeating layers of aragonite mineral crystals, arranged in a brick-and-mortar pattern, with organic proteins acting as the mortar between them. This hierarchical arrangement contributes to its remarkable mechanical resilience, making it one of the toughest natural materials known.

The formation of nacrekerroksen occurs through a biological process involving specialized cells called mantle cells.
