Naaberinterpolatsioon

Naaberinterpolatsioon, also known as nearest neighbor interpolation or zeroth-order hold, is a simple method for approximating unknown values within a dataset based on the closest known data point. It is frequently used in image processing, resampling, and data visualization.

The core principle of naaberinterpolatsioon is straightforward. When you need to estimate a value at a specific location, you simply find the data point that is geographically closest to that location and assign its value to the unknown point. In the context of images, this means that when an image is resized, each new pixel's color is determined by the color of the nearest pixel in the original image.

This method is computationally inexpensive and fast, making it suitable for real-time applications or when dealing with very large datasets. However, it has limitations. Naaberinterpolatsioon can produce blocky or pixelated results, especially when resizing images. It does not consider the surrounding data points, which can lead to a loss of detail and smoothness. For instance, when upscaling an image, the original pixel values are simply repeated, creating a jagged appearance rather than a smooth transition. Despite its simplicity, naaberinterpolatsioon remains a valuable tool when speed is paramount and visual fidelity is less critical.
