NVDIMMs

NVDIMMs, or non-volatile DIMMs, are memory modules designed to provide both fast access and data persistence. They combine volatile memory with non-volatile storage and incorporate power-loss protection so that data in memory can be preserved across outages. This capability makes NVDIMMs attractive for servers and data centers that require rapid crash recovery and durable in-memory data.

A primary variant is NVDIMM-N, which uses DRAM as the fast volatile layer alongside a non-volatile backing store, typically NAND flash, on the same module. A power-loss protection device, such as a supercapacitor or battery, ensures that data in DRAM can be flushed to the non-volatile store during a power interruption, allowing quick recovery when power returns. NVDIMM-F, by contrast, relies on non-volatile flash with a controller, sometimes including a small cache, and presents a memory-like interface to software. While it offers persistence and faster access than conventional flash, its performance characteristics are generally lower than NVDIMM-N. A newer family, NVDIMM-P, refers to modules built on emerging persistent memory technologies that are byte-addressable and designed to integrate with software using persistent memory programming models.

Adoption of NVDIMMs requires hardware and software support, including appropriate power-loss protection, firmware, and operating system or application-level persistence primitives. Standardization efforts, notably by JEDEC, have guided interfaces and behaviors to promote interoperability across server platforms. Common use cases include in-memory databases, high-availability systems, and crash-consistent recovery workflows, where the aim is to minimize downtime and data loss. Limitations include higher cost and capacity constraints relative to traditional DRAM and SSDs, as well as the need for specialized tooling to fully exploit non-volatile memory semantics.
