NCDatenformate are the data representations used to encode numerical control instructions and related data for machine tools and other manufacturing equipment. They cover the transfer, interpretation, and execution of toolpaths, machine parameters, process metadata, and status information across CAM systems, CNC controllers, and simulation tools. The term is commonly applied to both legacy and modern formats that enable interoperability in manufacturing workflows.

The most widely known NC data format is G-code, a text-based language that specifies motions, spindle speeds, feeds, coolant control, and other operations. G-code variants and dialects exist between manufacturers and controllers, often requiring post-processing to suit specific hardware. In addition to traditional G-code, standardized approaches aim to improve interoperability through higher-level representations of manufacturing intent.

A notable advancement is STEP-NC, an extension of the STEP family designed to encode not only geometric data but also manufacturing goals, processes, and capabilities. STEP-NC seeks to bridge CAM and CNC by allowing software to generate machine instructions from a common, vendor-agnostic model. Other ISO standards and vendor-specific formats also play a role, reflecting the diverse needs of tooling, materials, and control technologies.

Practical considerations include the choice between human-readable text formats and compact binary representations, as well as the need for translation and post-processing to ensure compatibility with different controllers. Interoperability challenges remain, driving continued development of standardized data models and translation pipelines within the manufacturing ecosystem.
