Mütterlicheitung is a term occasionally used in German-language discussions to refer to a form of mother-led guidance or instruction in child-rearing. As a neologism, it is not widely standardized in dictionaries or peer-reviewed literature. In contexts where it appears, it denotes practices in which mothers provide attuned, responsive, and affectively warm guidance that shapes a child’s learning and behavior.

Etymology and usage: the word combines Mutter with Leitung (guidance, leadership); some writers prefer the phrase mütterliche Anleitung or mütterliche Leitung rather than a single compound word. The coinage is often encountered in qualitative studies of family dynamics, parenting manuals, or feminist critiques of caregiving.

Concept and scope: mütterlicheitung emphasizes relational aspects of teaching and socialization, such as modeling, emotional regulation, and communication during play, as well as support for autonomy. It is usually discussed alongside other caregiving paradigms (paternal guidance, shared parenting) and in relation to cultural norms about gender roles.

Criticism and limitations: as a relatively informal term, it risks essentializing gendered caregiving or overlooking diversity within mothering practices.
