Childrearing refers to the process by which parents, guardians, and communities nurture a child from infancy through adolescence to foster health, development, and eventual independence. It includes daily care, emotional support, guidance, and exposure to social and cultural norms.

The field draws on various theories and practices. Baumrind’s parenting styles—authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved—have shaped understanding of warmth, control, and autonomy. Contemporary approaches emphasize warmth, responsiveness, consistent expectations, and developmentally appropriate practices. Attachment theory highlights the importance of secure relationships, while social learning and positive parenting emphasize model-based learning and constructive feedback.

Core domains include physical care (nutrition, sleep, safety), cognitive development (language, problem solving, education), social–emotional development (self-regulation, empathy), and socialization (norms, cooperation). Routines, nutrition, health care, and safe environments support healthy growth. The role of caregiving can involve immediate family as well as extended relatives and community resources.

Discipline aims to guide behavior with clear expectations and fair consequences, prioritizing non-punitive strategies when possible. Education decisions, including early childhood programs and schooling, influence long-term outcomes. Cultural, economic, and individual child factors shape practices, and rights-based perspectives emphasize autonomy, protection, and the child’s best interests.
