Målmbraner are a class of conceptual boundary surfaces used primarily in the analysis of goal‑driven systems within engineering and applied mathematics. The term blends the Swedish word for “goal” (mål) with the English suffix “brane,” indicating a membrane or boundary. In practice, a målmbrane represents a mathematical surface that encodes an objective or performance criterion into a spatial or temporal domain. By incorporating a målmbrane into a differential equation or optimization framework, designers can enforce target performance behaviours while still respecting underlying physical constraints.

The concept emerged in the late 1990s as part of objective‑oriented control theory, where engineers sought to embed desired output profiles directly into the governing equations of a system. Early applications appeared in aerospace trajectory optimization, where a målmbrane would constrain fuel consumption or mission time. More recent uses include structural design, where the surface represents a stress or displacement limit that must be met across the optimized geometry, and in data‑driven modeling, where målmbraner help formalize loss functions as surfaces in parameter space.
