Märgituvastus, often translated as "marker detection" or "symbol recognition," is a computational process used to identify and locate specific visual markers or symbols within an image or video stream. These markers are typically predefined patterns, such as geometric shapes, logos, or QR codes, designed to be easily distinguishable from their surroundings. The goal of märgituvastus is to extract information about the presence, position, and orientation of these markers.

The process generally involves several stages. First, an image is acquired, and preprocessing steps may be applied to enhance contrast or reduce noise. Next, feature extraction techniques are employed to identify potential marker candidates based on their unique visual characteristics, such as edges, corners, or color patterns.
