Myripristis

Myripristis is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Holocentridae. They are commonly known as soldierfish. The name Myripristis is derived from the Greek words "myrios" meaning numerous and "pristis" meaning saw, possibly referring to the large fleshy spines present on the bodies of these fish.

The Myripristis genus comprises around 40 species found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. They are typically small to medium-sized fish, reaching lengths of up to 25 cm or more. The majority of species exhibit a yellowish or brownish coloration, with scattered dark spots or stripes.

Soldierfish are characterized by their elongated body shape, long pectoral fins, and a spiny dorsal fin. A distinctive feature of these fish is the presence of numerous fleshy spines, which cover their bodies, giving them a saw-like appearance. Some species have an additional fleshy spine-like growth on the anterior part of the dorsal fin, while others may have a few short spines on the anal fin.

Myripristis species are found in tropical and subtropical regions, generally inhabiting areas with rocks, reefs, and coral formations. They tend to haunt zones with sufficient cover for ambush predators, suggesting they are primarily nocturnal and carnivorous, preying upon small invertebrates and fish.
