Mustesäiliöiden, commonly referred to as ink cartridges, are crucial components of inkjet printing technology. These disposable or refillable containers hold the liquid ink that is transferred onto paper to create images and text. The design of a mustesäiliö is optimized for precise ink delivery and is typically composed of a plastic casing that encloses the ink reservoir. Many cartridges also incorporate a printhead, either integrated or separate, which contains tiny nozzles responsible for atomizing the ink and spraying it onto the paper in controlled patterns.

Ink cartridges come in various types, primarily differentiated by color. The most basic systems use a single black cartridge for monochrome printing. More advanced systems utilize multiple color cartridges, often including cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY), which can be combined to produce a wide spectrum of colors. Some printers also incorporate specialized cartridges for photo printing, which may contain additional shades of ink like light cyan, light magenta, or gray for smoother tonal transitions. The lifespan of a mustesäiliö is determined by the amount of ink it contains and the printing volume. Once depleted, they are either replaced with new ones or, in some cases, refilled.
