Mumifitseerimine

Mumifitseerimine refers to the process of preserving a corpse through natural or artificial means, preventing its decomposition. Natural mummification occurs when a body is placed in an environment with conditions that inhibit bacterial growth and decay. These environments often include extreme cold, dryness, or high salt content. For example, bodies found in Arctic ice or desert sands are often naturally mummified.

Artificial mummification involves deliberate human intervention to preserve the body. This was famously practiced by ancient Egyptians, who developed elaborate rituals and techniques. Their process involved removing internal organs, drying the body with natron salt, and then wrapping it in linen bandages, often with the application of resins and oils. The purpose was largely religious, believing that preserving the body was essential for the deceased's journey to the afterlife.

Other cultures have also practiced mummification, though their methods and reasons might differ. In some South American cultures, for instance, bodies were dried and sometimes painted or adorned before burial. The techniques used in mummification varied greatly, from simple air-drying to complex embalming and preservation processes. The study of mummies provides valuable insights into past cultures, including their beliefs, health, diet, and burial practices.
