Multifelt

Multifelt is a term used to describe a family of engineered felt-based composites designed to combine properties achieved by different felting methods into a single sheet or layer. In textile engineering and materials science, multifelt refers to materials formed by interlocking, binding, or layering fibers through multiple felting processes, such as wet felting, needle felting, and thermal or mechanical bonding. By mixing natural, synthetic, or blended fibers and applying varied felting steps, multifelt aims to offer a customizable mix of thickness, density, and resilience.

Composition and production methods typically involve layering fibers with different functional roles. Wool, recycled fibers, or plant fibers may be used, sometimes with binders or lubricants to aid felting. A core layer may provide stiffness while surface layers supply texture or softness. Production can include sequential wet felting to form a base sheet, followed by needle felting for reinforcement or texture, and finishing steps such as heat setting or compression to stabilize dimensions.

Properties and performance are driven by fiber choice, density, and the balance of bonding methods. Multifelt sheets can exhibit tunable compressive strength, dimensional stability, and surface quality. Moisture management depends on the fiber system, with wool-rich variants offering some hygroscopic regulation. Thermal behavior depends on fiber content and fabric density, while durability hinges on processing and any added binding agents.

Applications span automotive interiors, furniture and acoustic panels, protective padding for sports or industrial use, and crafts where a dense, cohesive felt surface is desirable. Environmental considerations include the recyclability of the fiber blend and the presence of non-fiber additives or binders.
