Multicontaminants is a term used to describe the presence and effects of multiple contaminants within a single sample, medium, or exposure scenario. It is applied in environmental science, toxicology, and public health to reflect that humans and ecosystems are often exposed to mixtures of chemicals rather than to individual substances in isolation. Multicontaminant assessment addresses contaminants across matrices such as water, soil, air, food, and biological tissues, as well as cumulative exposure across multiple routes.

In risk assessment, multicontaminant approaches seek to understand how chemicals interact to produce combined health effects. Effects may be additive, synergistic, or antagonistic, making simple single-substance risk estimates insufficient. Common methods include dose-addition and response-addition models, as well as more complex interaction frameworks that account for mechanisms of action and exposure patterns. Monitoring relies on multi-analyte analytical techniques and non-target screening to detect known and unknown contaminants, often requiring high-throughput chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Regulatory and policy contexts increasingly incorporate cumulative or mixture risk assessment, aiming to protect public health and ecosystems from realistic exposure scenarios. Challenges include data gaps on mixture toxicology, variability in exposure, differences in susceptibility, and uncertainty in extrapolating laboratory findings to real-world settings. Transparent risk communication and risk management are essential, given the complexity of interactions within mixtures.

Research directions focus on improving models of mixture toxicity, developing biomarkers of multicontaminant exposure, advancing joint monitoring strategies, and refining regulatory frameworks to address real-world exposures while balancing feasibility and protection.
