Multicontaminants
Multicontaminants is a term used to describe the presence and effects of multiple contaminants within a single sample, medium, or exposure scenario. It is applied in environmental science, toxicology, and public health to reflect that humans and ecosystems are often exposed to mixtures of chemicals rather than to individual substances in isolation. Multicontaminant assessment addresses contaminants across matrices such as water, soil, air, food, and biological tissues, as well as cumulative exposure across multiple routes.
In risk assessment, multicontaminant approaches seek to understand how chemicals interact to produce combined health effects.
Regulatory and policy contexts increasingly incorporate cumulative or mixture risk assessment, aiming to protect public health
Research directions focus on improving models of mixture toxicity, developing biomarkers of multicontaminant exposure, advancing joint
