Extrapolating is the process of estimating values outside the range of observed data by extending a known relationship, trend, or model. It relies on assumptions that the underlying pattern continues beyond the available observations. Extrapolation is widely used in statistics, data analysis, science, engineering, economics, and finance.

Extrapolation uses models fitted to data, such as linear or polynomial regression, exponential or logistic growth, or physics-based laws, to project values for new inputs. Unlike interpolation, which estimates within the range of observed data, extrapolation extends beyond that range and is generally more uncertain. It may also combine multiple sources, such as time-series models and causal models.

Applications include time-series forecasting, growth projections, risk assessment, climate and environmental modeling, and engineering design where future or distant inputs are required. It is a common tool for planning and decision making when direct measurements are unavailable.

Risks and uncertainty accompany extrapolation. The accuracy of extrapolated values depends on the validity of the model and the stability of the system being studied. Uncertainty typically increases with distance from the observed data. Regime shifts, nonlinearity, changing conditions, measurement error, and overfitting can lead to large errors. Quantifying uncertainty through confidence intervals, conducting sensitivity analyses, and exploring alternative scenarios can help communicate and manage risk.

Examples illustrate limitations: linear extrapolation may fail if trends flatten or reverse; in science and engineering, extending beyond validated regimes may conflict with established laws; in finance, market conditions can change abruptly, undermining simple projections.
