Muhammad (Arabic: محمد, romanized: Muḥammad), commonly known as Muhammad ibn Abdullah, was the founder of Islam and is considered by Muslims to be the final prophet sent by God (Allah) to guide humanity. Born around 570 CE in the city of Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia, he belonged to the tribe of Quraysh. His father, Abdullah, died before his birth, and he was raised by his grandfather and uncle.

Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel (Jibril) in 610 CE while meditating in a cave on Mount Hira near Mecca. This revelation marked the beginning of his prophetic mission, during which he received the Quran, the holy book of Islam, over a period of approximately 23 years. Initially, his teachings faced opposition from the polytheistic tribes of Mecca, leading to persecution of early Muslims. In 622 CE, he and his followers migrated to Medina, an event known as the Hijra, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

In Medina, Muhammad established a community based on Islamic principles, resolving conflicts, promoting social justice, and unifying various tribes. He also led military campaigns to defend the Muslim community against hostile neighbors, though his primary focus remained on spiritual and moral guidance. His death in 632 CE in Medina followed by a period of illness, but his legacy endured through the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet).

Muhammad is revered by Muslims as a model of moral and ethical conduct, emphasizing honesty, compassion, and humility. His life serves as a guide for personal and communal behavior, emphasizing the importance of faith, charity, and justice. The Islamic world views him as a universal prophet, with many traditions and practices rooted in his teachings and example. His name, Muhammad, means "the praised one" or "the one who is worthy of praise."
