Motorneuronsykdom

Motorneuronsykdom, often referred to as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in English, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons. These are the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. As motor neurons degenerate, the brain loses its ability to send signals to the muscles, leading to progressive weakness and paralysis.

The exact cause of motorneuronsykdom is unknown in most cases, though a small percentage are linked to genetic mutations. The disease typically affects individuals between the ages of 40 and 70, and it is more common in men. Symptoms can vary but commonly include muscle twitching, muscle cramps, and increasing weakness in the limbs.
