Motionsensor

A motionsensor is a device designed to detect movement within a defined sensing area and to generate a signal in response. They are widely used in security systems, automated lighting, and building automation to improve safety and conserve energy.

The most common sensing technologies are passive infrared (PIR), microwave Doppler, and ultrasonic sensors. PIR sensors detect changes in infrared energy emitted by warm bodies and do not emit energy themselves. Microwave sensors emit microwave signals and measure Doppler shifts, while ultrasonic sensors transmit sound waves and receive echoes to detect motion. Some devices combine two technologies to improve reliability, a configuration often called dual-technology.

PIR sensors generally have a wide field of view and are less prone to false alarms from nonmoving backgrounds, but they can be affected by rapid temperature changes and require the moving subject to cross the field. Microwave and ultrasonic sensors can detect motion through obstacles and can cover larger spaces, but may be more susceptible to environmental clutter and require placement considerations to avoid false detections.

Typical motion sensors offer adjustable sensitivity and a delay or hold time to prevent repeated triggering. Outputs are commonly digital, providing a switch or a control signal to relays, microcontrollers, or home automation hubs. Power may be supplied by batteries or by mains with low-power operation.

Applications include intruder alarms, automatic door systems, occupancy-based lighting and climate control, and energy management in commercial and residential buildings.

Limitations include susceptibility to pets, rapid temperature changes, direct heat sources, drafts, and glass or metal surfaces that reflect or shield signals. Proper installation and testing are essential to balance detection rate and false alarms.
