Detections refer to the act or results of determining the presence of something in data or observations. They arise from processing signals collected by sensors and instruments, and aim to decide whether a signal or event of interest is present. Detections may be single occurrences or ongoing confirmations, depending on the domain and data quality.

In quantitative terms, detection performance is described by metrics such as sensitivity (true positive rate) and specificity (true negative rate). The detection threshold sets the criterion for flipping from non-detection to detection. False positives and false negatives reflect trade-offs, and receiver operating characteristic curves illustrate performance across thresholds. Detection limits indicate the smallest signal reliably detectable given noise and background.

Applications span many fields. In astronomy, detections include stars, exoplanets, or transient events; in particle physics, rare events are detected against background; in medicine, imaging detects tumors or lesions; in environmental monitoring, detections indicate pollutants or hazardous conditions; in cybersecurity, detections identify intrusions; in manufacturing, defects are detected during quality control.

Methods include thresholding, matched filtering, statistical hypothesis testing, machine learning classifiers, anomaly detection, and data fusion from multiple sensors. The choice depends on signal properties, noise characteristics, and the consequences of errors. Automated detections are often supplemented by human review to confirm results and guide subsequent actions.

Challenges in detection include low signal-to-noise ratios, nonstationary backgrounds, bias and data quality issues, interpretability, and the risk of overfitting in model-based approaches. Detections are context dependent and require careful validation to support scientific conclusions, policy decisions, or operational actions.
