Moolisuuksia

Moolisuuksia is a Finnish term that translates to "bison" in English. It refers to the large, bovine mammals belonging to the genus Bison. These animals are native to North America and Europe, though their historical ranges have been significantly reduced. The two main species are the American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (Bison bonasus), also known as the wisent.

American bison are characterized by their massive heads, humped shoulders, and thick, shaggy fur, particularly around their heads and forequarters. They are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses and sedges. Historically, vast herds roamed the North American plains, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem. Their populations experienced a drastic decline in the 19th century due to overhunting and habitat loss, but conservation efforts have led to a recovery, although they are still considered near threatened.

The European bison is the largest land mammal in Europe. It is similar in appearance to its American cousin but generally has longer legs and a more evenly distributed coat. European bison also faced severe endangerment, with the wild population becoming extinct in the early 20th century. However, a successful reintroduction program, utilizing individuals from zoos and private collections, has allowed the species to return to some European forests. Like the American bison, they are grazers and play an important role in forest ecosystems by influencing vegetation.
