Mohairziegen

Mohairziegen are a breed of goat primarily raised for their luxurious fiber, known as mohair. These animals are distinguished by their long, silky, and lustrous fleece, which grows continuously and is typically white, although colored varieties exist. Mohair is highly sought after for its durability, warmth, and sheen, making it ideal for use in textiles such as clothing, upholstery, and carpets.

Originating from the Ankara region of Turkey, the breed's name is derived from the Turkish word "müheyhûr," meaning "best goat." Historically, mohair goats were highly prized and their export was restricted for centuries. Over time, they were introduced to other parts of the world, including South Africa, the United States, and Australia, where significant breeding programs were established.

Mohair goats are generally hardy animals with a calm temperament. They are known for their graceful appearance, often with long, drooping ears and a flowing fleece that can reach considerable lengths. The fiber is typically shorn twice a year, yielding a significant amount of mohair per animal. The quality of the mohair can vary depending on the age of the goat, with younger animals producing finer, softer fibers.
