ModR, short for Modular Robotics Protocol, is an open standard and ecosystem intended to enable plug-and-play interoperability among modular robotic hardware and software. It defines a common metadata schema, a lightweight communication model, and reference implementations to help vendors, researchers, and educators build compatible modules that can be reconfigured without bespoke adapters.

Architecture and data model: At its core ModR specifies a Module Description File that expresses a module’s physical capabilities (actuators, sensors), power and communication requirements, and software interfaces. Modules register with a central Registry and expose services through a Runtime Layer. The communication protocol supports discovery, capability negotiation, state synchronization, and safe reconfiguration, using human-readable descriptions and compact binary payloads.

Interoperability and safety: ModR emphasizes device-neutral interfaces and modular composition, enabling assemblies such as modular grippers, wheels, and sensing pods to be combined across vendors. It includes safety policies, access controls, and fault containment features to handle partial failures during dynamic reconfiguration.

History and governance: ModR emerged from collaborations among universities, robotics labs, and industry partners in the 2010s. An open-source reference implementation and test suites are maintained by a community governance body, with annual updates and compatibility guarantees for minor releases.

Applications and impact: The standard is used in education, research prototyping, and demonstration platforms, supporting rapid iteration of robotic configurations. It faces competition from vendor-specific ecosystems and ongoing work to improve real-time performance, security, and large-scale scalability.
