Modemixity

Modemixity is a term used to describe the degree to which a system exhibits both modular structure and continuous dynamics. It denotes how clearly modular components or subsystems interact with smoothly varying parameters and states. The concept is used across disciplines to classify hybrid configurations that are not fully modular yet not purely continuous.

Origins and usage: The term is a relatively recent coinage in discussions of complex systems, hybrid architectures, and data science. It is not widely standardized, and its precise definition can vary by context.

Characterization and measurement: Assessments often combine qualitative description with quantitative indicators. Typical factors include the proportion of discrete modules or interfaces, the presence of continuous parameters within and across modules, and the strength of coupling at module boundaries. Some researchers frame modemixity along a spectrum from low (predominantly modular) to high (predominantly continuous).
