Mobiltelefons (mobile phones) are portable wireless devices that allow voice calls and text messaging and, in modern models, a broad range of data services. They have evolved from simple communication tools to compact computing devices that can run third‑party applications, access the internet, and integrate with other digital ecosystems.

Historically, the first handheld mobile systems emerged in the late 20th century with analog networks (1G). Digital 2G networks in the 1990s introduced SMS and improved capacity. Subsequent generations—3G, 4G, and 5G—brought mobile broadband, higher speeds, lower latency, and new use cases such as video calling, streaming, and the Internet of Things. Modern devices are typically pocket-sized, energy efficient, and include powerful processors, high‑resolution displays, cameras, and sensors.

Core components include a cellular radio, baseband processor, memory, battery, display, and input methods. Most devices use a SIM card or eSIM to authenticate with networks. They run operating systems such as Android or iOS, support app stores, and offer features like biometric security, GPS positioning, and various connectivity options (Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, NFC).

Types range from feature phones with limited capabilities to advanced smartphones and foldables. Many deliver multifactor authentication, cloud integration, and extensive accessibility options. In many regions, phones are central to communications, commerce, education, and emergency services, while concerns about privacy, security, device compatibility, and electronic waste receive ongoing attention.
