Mittetulundusühendustena

Mittetulundusühendustena, often translated as non-profit associations or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), are a significant part of Estonia's civil society. These are legal entities established by individuals or other legal entities to pursue common goals and interests that are not primarily aimed at generating profit. Instead, their focus is on achieving social, cultural, educational, environmental, or other public benefit objectives.

The legal framework for non-profit associations in Estonia is primarily governed by the Non-profit Associations Act. This act outlines the conditions for their establishment, registration, governance, and dissolution. To be registered as a non-profit association, a group must have at least two founders, and they must adopt a statute that clearly defines the association's purpose, membership, governing bodies, and financial management.

Non-profit associations in Estonia can engage in a wide range of activities, from advocating for specific causes and providing social services to organizing cultural events and promoting research. They can receive funding from various sources, including membership fees, donations from individuals and corporations, grants from foundations, and government funding. While their primary aim is not profit, they may engage in income-generating activities to support their mission, but any surplus generated must be reinvested into the association's activities rather than distributed among members.
