Milieu audits are systematic, independent assessments of an organization’s environmental performance and its adherence to environmental policies, legal requirements, and the elements of its environmental management system. Their purpose is to determine conformity, assess the effectiveness of controls, and identify opportunities for improvement in areas such as pollution prevention, resource use, and waste management.

Audits can be internal or external and may be scheduled or unscheduled.
