Mikaryhmät, often translated as "micronations," are entities that claim to be independent sovereign states but are not recognized by established sovereign states or major international organizations. These self-proclaimed nations can vary widely in their nature, from serious political experiments to whimsical artistic projects. Their existence often relies on symbolic gestures, territorial claims over land that is not de facto controlled or recognized, or even entirely virtual spaces.

The motivations behind establishing a mikaryhmä are diverse. Some individuals or groups may seek to explore alternative political systems, express dissatisfaction with existing governments, or simply engage in creative world-building. Others might be driven by a desire for personal recognition or a sense of community among like-minded individuals.
