Micropterus
Micropterus is a genus of ray-finned fishes in the sunfish family Centrarchidae, commonly referred to as black bass. Members are predatory freshwater fishes native to North America and are valued in sport fishing for their fighting ability and varied appearances. The genus contains several well-known species, including the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), as well as the spotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus), the Guadalupe bass (Micropterus treculii), and the shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae). Florida bass has been described as a distinct species by some taxonomists (Micropterus floridanus), while other regional populations have been debated. The Alabama bass (Micropterus henshalli) has similarly contested status in some classifications.
