They are commonly presented as entries in broader mindfulness or stress-management programs and are often contrasted with longer, traditional meditation sessions.

Common approaches include focused breathing (for example, counting breaths or simple diaphragmatic breathing), rapid body scans that observe sensation in a few body regions, grounding exercises that anchor attention to the senses, and short sensory or perceptual checks (noting what is seen, heard, or felt in the present moment). Practice tends to be informal and can be performed seated, standing, or even during brief walking breaks.

Usage contexts include during work breaks, commutes, before meetings, or in the wake of an upsetting event. Reported benefits include reduced perceived stress, improved moment-to-moment focus, and quicker returns to baseline mood after distractions. Evidence is mixed and varies by method, duration, and fidelity of practice; more rigorous research is needed to determine long-term effects.
