A microdomain typically refers to areas on the order of nanometers to micrometers that exhibit distinct composition, structure, or function relative to the surrounding milieu. The term emphasizes locality and specificity rather than global behavior.

In biology, microdomainspecific processes include signaling events localized to membranes or organelles, such as lipid rafts or signaling nanodomains, where receptors, kinases, and second messengers concentrate to produce selective responses. In neuroscience, microdomainspecific calcium signaling or neurotransmitter release tracks are well documented as activities that occur in confined subcellular domains. In materials science, microdomains arise in phase-separated polymers, composite materials, or alloys where distinct domains govern optical, mechanical, or transport properties.

Measurement and analysis of microdomainspecific phenomena rely on high-resolution and localized techniques, such as super-resolution imaging, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, proximity labeling, and imaging mass spectrometry.
