Metalliseksi

Metalliseksi is a Finnish term that expresses becoming or being converted into metal. It is a translative form of the noun metalli and is used to describe the result of a metallization process, or, in some contexts, the state of being metallic. In everyday language it is less common than verbs like metallisoida, but it appears in technical or descriptive passages to denote an outcome.

In materials science, metallization refers to applying a metal layer to a nonmetallic substrate to impart properties such as electrical conductivity, reflectivity, corrosion resistance, or an aesthetic finish. Coating thickness can range from nanometers to several micrometers, depending on the application and method. The word metalliseksi may be used to describe the surface’s new metallic state after coating, though industry texts typically use verbs and nouns related to the process.

Common methods of metallization include electroplating (electrolytic deposition), electroless plating, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods such as sputtering. Metallization can also be achieved by chemical or electrochemical routes. The choice of method depends on substrate compatibility, required adhesion, coating thickness, metal choice, and cost considerations.

Applications span electronics (contacts and interconnects), optics (reflective or conductive coatings), automotive and architectural finishes, packaging, and solar cells. Safety and environmental considerations are important in processes like electroplating due to chemical use and waste management. In Finnish terminology, metalli-related processes are often described with metallointi or metallisoida, while metalliseksi denotes the result or state of being metallic.
