The genre has evolved into numerous subgenres, each with distinct musical and thematic elements, reflecting its diverse and expansive nature.

The origins of metal can be traced back to bands like Black Sabbath, who incorporated darker, heavier sounds into their music, and Led Zeppelin, whose blend of hard rock and blues laid the groundwork for the genre. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motörhead helped popularize what is now known as classic heavy metal. This era emphasized speed, power chords, and melodic solos, establishing many of the conventions that define the genre.
