Lowtuned refers to the practice of detuning a musical instrument, most commonly a guitar, to a pitch lower than standard tuning. This technique is widely employed in various music genres, particularly in heavy metal, rock, and punk, to achieve a heavier, more aggressive, and darker tonal quality.

The process involves altering the tension of the strings by loosening them, which in turn lowers their resonant frequency. Common low tunings include Drop D, where the lowest string (E) is tuned down a whole step to D, and standard tuning variations like D standard (all strings down a whole step) or C standard (all strings down a minor third). More extreme tunings, such as B standard or A standard, are also utilized for exceptionally heavy sounds.

Lowtuning offers several benefits. The lowered pitch produces a fuller, more resonant sound, and the looser strings can facilitate easier bending and vibrato. Furthermore, the detuned intervals can create a sense of dissonance or unease, contributing to a more intense musical atmosphere. The practice demands adjustments in playing technique, as the altered string tension and pitch can affect fretting, chord voicings, and overall intonation.
