Menstruaatio

Menstruaatio, also known as a period, is a natural biological process that occurs in people with uteruses. It is part of the menstrual cycle, a monthly series of changes a female body goes through in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the uterus sheds its lining, which is called menstruation. This shedding involves bleeding from the uterus through the cervix and out of the vagina.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. The typical cycle length is around 28 days, but this can vary significantly from person to person, with cycles ranging from 21 to 35 days being considered normal. Menstruation usually lasts for 3 to 7 days. During this time, a person may experience various symptoms, including abdominal cramps, bloating, mood changes, and fatigue. These symptoms are often referred to as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or period pain.

The first menstruation, called menarche, typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 16. Menstruation continues until menopause, which is the cessation of periods, usually occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. Menstruation is a sign of reproductive health and a normal part of life for many people. Maintaining good hygiene during menstruation is important, and products like pads, tampons, and menstrual cups are commonly used to manage the flow.
