Mellanobservatörer is a Swedish term that literally translates to “intermediate observers.” In research methodology it refers to observers who function between the roles of overt and covert observation. Unlike overt observers, who are fully identified and acknowledged by participants, or covert observers, who remain anonymous and unobtrusive, mellanobservatörer maintain a balance. They are known to participants but are not fully integrated into the setting or specifically guided by the researcher's agenda. This positioning allows them to reduce the observer effect while still providing context that is more naturalistic than overt observation and more structured than covert observation.

The role of a mellanobservatör is particularly useful in studies of group interactions where participants might adjust their behaviour if they know they are being studied closely. By appearing as a regular member of the environment—such as a studio assistant, a conference attendee, or a shop employee—the observer can record behaviours and patterns that would otherwise be distorted. The literature on ethnography, participant observation and sociological fieldwork often distinguishes between full participant observers and non-participants, with mellanobservatörer occupying a middle ground that offers methodological flexibility.
