Mehrzonenpässe

Mehrzonenpässe are passes in public transport tariff systems that are valid across multiple fare zones. They are common in German-speaking countries with zonal pricing, where tickets are priced according to the number of zones traveled rather than the distance. A Mehrzonenpass covers travel within a defined set of zones for a specified period, such as daily, weekly, monthly or yearly validity. The exact zones covered are shown on the ticket or tariff map; some systems allow travel through zone boundaries between adjacent zones without extra payment.

The passes are typically available from transit operators via ticket machines, service counters, or mobile apps. To purchase, travelers select the start and end zones or choose a predefined zone set, and the fare is determined by the number of zones included. Validity periods are fixed and begin with first validation or on the date of issue, depending on the system.

A Mehrzonenpass is especially convenient for people who frequently travel across several zones, such as commuters or cross-regional travelers. It is often cheaper than purchasing multiple single-journey tickets or several zonal tickets for the same period. Limitations include that the pass is valid only within the specified zones and during the stated time frame; travelling outside the covered zones or outside the validity period requires additional tickets. Transfers between different operators are typically not allowed unless the tariff system is integrated within a wider tariff union.
