Mehiläisyhdyskunnat, often referred to as bee colonies, are highly organized social structures found in various bee species, most notably honey bees. These colonies are characterized by a sophisticated division of labor and a cooperative lifestyle that ensures the survival and reproduction of the group. A typical honey bee colony consists of a single queen, a large number of sterile female workers, and a smaller population of male drones.

The queen bee is the reproductive center of the colony, responsible for laying all the eggs. Her pheromones also play a crucial role in maintaining colony cohesion and regulating the behavior of other bees. Worker bees, also females, perform all the tasks necessary for the colony's survival. These tasks include foraging for nectar and pollen, building and maintaining the honeycomb, caring for the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae), defending the hive from threats, and regulating the internal temperature. Drones, the male bees, have the sole purpose of mating with a virgin queen from another colony, after which they die.

Communication within a mehiläisyhdyskunta is complex and relies on chemical signals (pheromones) and intricate dances, such as the waggle dance, which workers use to inform others about the location and quality of food sources. The success of a bee colony depends on the harmonious interaction and collective effort of its members, demonstrating a remarkable example of eusociality in the natural world.
