Meggyengülés

Meggyengülés is a Hungarian noun describing the process of becoming weaker or less effective. It is used in a broad range of contexts to denote a decline in strength, function, or performance of a person, a system, or a structure. The term derives from the verb gyengülni with the prefix meg-, emphasizing a shift toward reduced capacity.

In health and medicine, meggyengülés commonly refers to diminished physical capacity, fatigue, or muscle weakness, which can occur due to aging, malnutrition, illness, or medical treatment. It may be temporary, such as during an acute infection, or persistent, as in conditions like sarcopenia or chronic disease. Immune function can also be described as meggyengült in certain clinical contexts, indicating increased susceptibility to infections. Diagnosis relies on clinical examination and, when appropriate, objective tests of strength, endurance, nutrition, or immune status.

In other domains, meggyengülés is used metaphorically to describe reduced performance or resilience of systems, such as an economy experiencing slowing growth or a mechanical structure showing signs of degradation. In engineering or physics, more precise terms (such as attenuation or degradation) are often preferred, but meggyengülés can still convey a general sense of weakening.

Causes of meggyengülés include aging, inactivity, poor nutrition, chronic diseases, infections, stress, and certain medications or hormonal changes.
