Medaglia

Medaglia, plural medaglie, is the Italian term for a medal: a flat, typically circular disk of metal awarded or issued to recognize achievement, service, or commemorative significance. Medaglie are common in military, civil, cultural, and sporting contexts and can be worn on uniforms or kept as keepsakes.

Types and use: In military and public life, medals recognize valor, long service, or distinguished contributions. Italy, like many countries, uses notable decorations such as the Medaglia d'oro al valor militare (Gold Medal of Military Valor), the Medaglia d'argento al valor militare (Silver Medal of Military Valor), and bronze equivalents, as well as civilian honors for science, art, and public service. Medaglie are also issued as commemoratives for historical events and anniversaries, or as participation tokens in events and competitions.

Design and production: Medaglie are usually struck or cast in metal and finished with designs depicting portraits, coats of arms, symbols, or inscriptions.
