Mechanismits are a proposed class of smart materials characterized by embedded mechanism-like units that enable reversible configurational changes under external stimuli, leading to tunable mechanical properties such as stiffness, damping, or shape. The concept emphasizes active internal reconfiguration rather than only passive property changes of the host matrix.

Origin and naming: The term mechanismit combines mechanism with the -ite suffix used in material naming, reflecting a modular, repeatable unit structure. The concept emerged in theoretical and experimental discussions within metamaterials and smart materials communities in the early 2010s, as a framework for describing materials with discrete internal decision points that control the macroscopic response.

Core features: Mechanismits consist of a host matrix integrated with discrete mechanism domains that can pivot, slide, or reorient in response to stimuli such as stress, temperature, or electric fields. These domains produce non-linear, programmable responses and can exhibit multiple stable states. They often display anisotropic behavior and may offer self-healing or adaptive damping under cycling conditions.

Synthesis and structure: Mechanismits are typically engineered through nano- to micro-scale assembly methods, including templated self-assembly, lithography, or layered composites that couple actuation to a matrix.
