The term derives from the adjective mattamainen and is used in the plural form mattamaiset when referring to multiple surfaces or colors (for example, mattamaiset pinnat). The related noun mattamaisuus denotes matte character or dullness, and mattapinta refers to a matte surface.

In practice, mattamaiset finishes are valued for reducing glare, producing softer reflections, and allowing more even color perception under various lighting. They are commonly applied to paints, coatings, textiles, ceramics, and display screens.
